Prof Nick Blagden will lead the next research development seminar entitled, Crystals and Medicine

Wednesday 28th September 2016

12pm-2pm*

MHT Building, 3rd Floor, MC3108

The application of crystal science to drug development will be presented.  For many drugs the pipeline between synthesis and biological activity generates potential active pharmaceutical compounds with poor process ability or bio availability.  90% of drugs a are delivered using solid dosage forms such as tablets, and the active compound are typically  in a crystalline form.   In order to improve bio availability, the crystal science of the drug is manipulated, using crystal engineering and supra molecular approaches.  These will be covered and examples presented of what can be achieved.   The current crystal science research funded by GSK and Astra Zeneca, previously has received EPSRC, Pfizer, Syngenta, Merck financial support.   The university has a national and international recognised critical mass in this area.   The team is currently jointly led by Prof Blagden, along with Prof I Scowen, Dr T Munshi, and Dr I Dr. Elisa Nauha.  The group has five PhD students funded by industry or overseas sponsors.   This area also strongly overlaps with staff research interest in Pharmacy, in particular polymer, biologic and nano drug delivery.  The aim of this seminar is to have input from other colleagues to improve the concept and to proceed with this research proposal.

The LIH extends a warm welcome to all interested in this exciting area.
